I’ve had more enjoyable moments from CM Punk over the last month than most performers give me in a whole career. Here’s my top ten and why:
10. Every time punk said something that was absolute truth that so many of us have thought or said to our friends like:
“He’s a millionaire who should be a billionaire. You know why he’s not a billionaire? It’s because he surrounds himself with glad-handing nonsensical douche bag yes-men like John Laurinaitis, who’s gonna tell him everything he wants to hear.”
Or
“Maybe I’ll even change the belt because that thing’s been far too ugly for far too long”
When Punk was doing this I felt a connection to someone who loves wrestling and cares, which, despite everything stupid they’ve done, is still also me. Someone was now on the hardcore fans side. And remember we once played a game on our Podcast around wrestling higher ups called Douche or No Douche where we came to the conclusion Lauriniaitis was indeed, a douche. If you missed it you can listen HERE
9. The tweets with the WWE Belt in CM Punk’s fridge and making a Punch-Out reference
“ @WWEUniverse: It’s 12:00 a.m. … Do you know where your WWE Champion is? #MITB @CMPunk The champ is…here: http://yfrog.com/kkb09zyj “
AND
“On my couch. About to put the title on the line against Piston Honda”
Because these were just funny.
8. Punk on the megaphone to Cena during Cena’s entrance “Sir, I’m afraid your music is just too loud”
Punk is able to be funny without sacrificing the seriousness of the moment or what he’s trying to get across, something Cena just seems unable to learn how to do.
7. Punk to Vince “There’s the problem, you don’t care what the fans think while I personally care too much”
This line to me summed up the issue between the 2 characters better than anything else.
6. On the way to the ring imitating Vince’s walk
He’s not the first person I’ve seen do this, or even the funniest, that would have been Kevin Nash and the send up of Vince he did on Nitro, but it was still great.
5. Walking up the ramp after his contract negotiation with Vince telling Cena “I’m the underdog”
I love this. We knew the Chicago crowd was going to be behind Punk already but this to me sold more ppv buys and people who may have been fans elsewhere of both men could feel for Punk and I now felt anyone who was on the fence on whose side to choose after this would pick Punk.
4. In the crowd celebrating post match with the fans going crazy around him holding the championship belt up high
I’m gone Vince, and now there’s nothing you can do about it. In that moment I realized that there is your real people’s champ folks. For one night everyone put away their belief this is scripted entertainment, wins and losses mattered, that championship meant everything, and the crowd just cheered their hero.
3. The look on his face after kicking Del Rio and while making eye contact with Vince
His expression was awesome. It said I’m smarter than you Vince, and I’m going to get away with this, and it was perfect.
2. “I’m the voice of the voiceless”
I don’t know if that was scripted or something he knew he was going to say when he went out there but it sure came off to me like something CM Punk just said off the cuff similar with Austin 3:16 and right there he cemented himself as a babyface who’s the anti John Cena to the hardcore fan base.
1. Saying to Vince “Why, because you don’t know what makes a superstar in 2011”
My favorite because I believe it to be so absolutely true, and it’s almost word for word what I’ve been on record saying myself many times. I just wanted someone to look Vince in the eye and tell him that so bad, and CM Punk did!
